Unilever R&D will build a new Global Foods Innovation Centre in Wageningen, the Netherlands. The Foods R&D organizations, currently based in Vlaardingen (The Netherlands), Heilbronn (Germany) and Poznan (Poland) will be co-located in the new centre.
In this way Unilever will create critical mass in expertise areas to ensure that the technologies ultimately bring benefit-led, breakthrough innovations to the markets. In addition, we aim to evolve our R&D sites into innovation ecosystems to leverage the knowledge and expertise of external partners.
The new centre is expected to be fully operational by Quarter 4 – 2019 .
MAIN JOB PURPOSE:

Plastic waste and the effects of single use packaging are currently topping the agenda in political and business forums. Far from being just an environmental issue for policy makers and environmentalists, working to minimize plastic waste is fast becoming a business imperative that every leading company is considering and planning for.
Unilever aware of this situation has made externally published commitments, to transform our portfolio to be 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable and to use 25% recycled plastic (PCR) in our products by 2025. And Foods & Refreshments wants to lead and accelerate this transformation as a source of competitive advantage with our Brands and in our markets.
Our Foods & Refreshments Packaging Capability organisation is charged with defining and driving best practice in technology, process, tools and techniques across Foods & Refreshment categories. The scope covers Digital Packaging, Packaging Excellence (how we do Packaging), Design Capability, Sustainability and Strategic Materials.
The Sustainability Technologist is a member of the Foods & Refreshments Category Capability Team. The purpose of the Sustainability Technologist is to support categories in tracking the Foods and Refreshment environmental impact and defining and developing new sustainable solutions to create a shift in the way citizens and consumers think about the impacts of the products in market.
As this is a cross category role there will be exposure across all of Unilevers Foods & Refreshment categories our Marketing partners, global sustainability packaging team and sustainable business stakeholders. There is the potential, based on the candidates success in the role, for exposure at senior levels in the Foods & Refreshment organisation.
As the Sustainability Technologist, your job will be to work closely with the Foods & Refreshments category teams to ensure we develop sustainable products and solutions which are capable of landing positively in the business. And enable a transformation in the way the business makes decisions.
Support the transformation of how Packaging will drive the systemic change needed to provide a viable solution to the single use plastic problem.
Help to develop and manage a strategic, long-term, results-oriented program that minimizes the environmental impact of packaging over the entire package/product value chain.
Work collaboratively with other parts of the business to identify the right consumer engagement in sustainability related issues.
Work with the project teams to calculate the environmental impact of several packaging options and select the most sustainable one.
Support the identification and compilation of sustainable metrics needed to report the sustainability performance of the Foods & Refreshments Division.
Identify and make recommendations about emerging business opportunities, technology capabilities or scientific breakthroughs that offer solutions in packaging sustainability.
Cultivate a robust eco-system of supplier and technology providers, start-ups, etc. to feed in to programmes and ensure disruption, exclusivity and first to market advantage.
Communicate learning and experiences throughout the Foods & Refreshments in a very concise and engaging manner.
Comply with the Unilever Code of Business Principles
-Job Experience: 3 5 years in sustainability related role (preferably FMCG Industry).
-Packaging and CTI experience would be advantageous.
-Degree in Environmental Science or related discipline.
-Understanding of Business Sustainability, RSC, environmental impact, and circular economy.
-Ability of data analysis
-Understanding of current environmental legislation, certification standards and waste management
-Passion for influencing and inspiring internal and external stakeholders
-Understanding of packaging development. Consumer trends, competitor activity and environmental issues
